The tables provide information on sales of fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004, in five European countries, namely the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
Overall, across the period, coffee sales increased in every country, while, with the exception of Sweden and Denmark, banana sales went up in other countries. Regarding coffee sales, Switzerland topped the chart in 1999, but the UK did in 2004. As for banana sales, Switzerland was by far the leader in both years.
Concerning coffee sales, the UK experienced the biggest growth, from 1.5 to 20 million euros. The figure for Switzerland exactly double (from 3 to 6 million euros). In contrast, Denmark (1.8m to 2m), Belgium (1m to 1.7m), and Sweden (0.8m to 1m) experienced small increases.
When considering the sales of bananas between 1999 and 2004, the figure for Switzerland more than tripled, rising from 15 million euros to 47 million euros. Both the UK and Belgium saw a growths, from 1 to 5.5 and 0.6 to 4 million euros respectively. On the other hand, figures for Sweden and Denmark actually went down, from 1.8 to 1 from 2 to 0.9 million euros, accordingly.
