The tables compare the production and consumption of potatoes in five different regions, namely, South and Central America, Africa, North America, Europe, and Asia or Oceania in 2006. Overall, the consumption of potatoes in Europe and North America was high, with the former showing the highest, while other regions’ potato consumption was relatively low. Although potato consumption was low in Asia, its production was the largest, followed by Europe and others. Africa had the lowest rate for the consumption, while the production of potatoes was the lowest in South and Central America.
In Europe, the highest amount of potatoes – nearly 96 kg of potatoes was consumed per person in 2006, followed by North America, where one person ate approximately 58 kg of potatoes. Other countries’ consumption was nearly four times lower than the consumption of Europe. The consumption per person in Asia and Central and South America was around 26 kg and 24 kg, respectively, whereas Africa’s consumption was the lowest at 14 kg.
The highest amount – 131 million tonnes of potatoes was produced in Asia in one year, followed by Europe with 126 million tonnes of potatoes. The amount of potatoes produced in these regions was six times higher than that of in other countries. North America produced almost 25 million tonnes of potatoes while South and Central America and Africa’s production was similarly low, with the former producing the lowest amount – 15,6 million tonnes of potatoes and the latter producing 16,4 million tonnes.
