Overall, Europe recorded the highest potato consumption per person, while Africa had the lowest. In contrast,Asia/Oceania and Europe were by far the largest producers, whereas South and Central America produced the smallest amount.
In 2006, Europe consumed the most potatoes, at 96 kilograms per person. North America was the second-largest consumer with 58 kilograms, followed by Asia/Oceania at 26 kilograms and South and Central America at 24 kilograms. Africa had the lowest figure, with only 14 kilograms per person.
In terms of potato production, Asia/Oceania produced the largest quantity in 2006, at 131 million tonnes, slightly ahead of Europe, which recorded 126 million tonnes. Africa was a distant third with 16 million tonnes, while South and Central America produced 13 million tonnes. North America had the smallest production at only 19 million tonnes.
