The tables show the amount of production and the annual consumption of potatoes per person in five countries – South and Central America, Africa, North America, Europe, Asia/Oceania – in 2006. Overall, the demand for potatoes was the highest in Europe, while the lowest was exhibited in Africa. Despite being the largest producer of potatoes, Asia/Oceania had a relatively low per-capita preference for them. Meanwhile, the modest figures for the production of potatoes were seen in South and North America.
The consumption of potatoes was the largest in Europe, at 96.1 kg per capita, while that of Africa was the lowest, which was 14.1 kg per person in 2006. The annual intake of potatoes for each person in South and Central America, and Asia/Oceania was 23.6 kg and 25.8 kg, respectively. It was 57.9 kg for North Americans.
South and Central America had the lowest potato output in 2006, at 15.6 million tonnes. Africa and North America generated 16.4 million tonnes and 24.7 million tonnes of potatoes, respectively. Europe and Asia/Oceania produced relatively larger quantities than their counterparts, with respective figures of 126.3 and 131.2 million tonnes.
