The pie charts illustrate the sales of five different types of book genres by a bookseller in the years 1972, 1992, and 2012 in the form of percentages.
In 1972, one quarter of sales were of other genre books. On the other hand, in 1992, adult fiction sales went up to 25% and in 2012, it rose to 45%. Children’s fiction book sales went from 22% in 1992 to 25% in 2012. The sales of other genres like biography, travel, and others decreased from 15%, 18%, and 20% respectively in 1992 to 8%, 10%, and 12% respectively in 2012.
The data given conclude that, over the years, interest has shifted to adult fiction and children’s fiction genres. Among school-going children, fiction has proven to be an escape from the curriculum or syllabus. In schools, they are only taught about rote-learning. So, this surge in sales was quite natural and expected. Whereas, adult fiction became popular as it allows them to think beyond their job prospects so that they don’t worry about their non-fictional life for some time and can enjoy their reading time freely.
