The charts provide information on the use of vehicles by UK residents in 1965, 1985, and 2005. Overall, the proportion of personal cars increased its dominance after 40 years. Moreover, it was the only type of transportation that always rose.
Firstly, a slight decline was seen in the percentage of communal transport over a period of 20 years before a minimal rise of 2% in 2005. Similarly, the proportion of motor vehicles decreased three-fold in 1985, and then modestly climbed up to 8%.
In contrast, the proportion of private automobiles grew significantly from two-fifths in 1965 to more than half in 1985. By 2005, 60% of people in the UK used their own cars for transportation. Remarkably, the proportion trucks and other commercial vehicles were stable at one-fifth for 20 years and tied public transport in second place in 1985. However, its proportion dropped to 10% by 2005.
