The pie charts compare how much water was used in various sectors in Sydney, Australia in 1997 and 2007. Overall, the preponderance of water was consumed in food manufacturing in both years, although with a decline. General manufacturing also saw a decrease, while other industries increased their water consumption.
In 1997, the food industry used nearly half the total water (48%), making it the largest consumer. Despite this figure dropping to 41%, it still consumed by far the highest percentage of water. Likewise, manufacturing decreased to 11%, down from 15% in 1997, showing a less pronounced decline. The lowest ranking construction industry dipped from 5% to just 2%.
By contrast, other sectors followed an upward trend. The largest percentage jump was recorded in the service industry, which almost doubled its water usage from 13% to 25%. This made the service sector the second largest consumer. Household use also rose, albeit less dramatically, with its figure increasing from 19% to 21%.
