The two tables compare the number of international students in Canada and the USA from three countries (China, the USA/Canada, and India) in the school years 2002-2003 and 2003-2004.
Overall, the total number of foreign students rose in Canada, while the figure for the USA fell slightly. Chinese students showed the most significant growth in Canada, whereas the number of Indian students in the USA dropped.
In Canada, the total international student population increased by 17%, from 60,000 to just over 70,000. Chinese students rose sharply by 45%, reaching 8,000, while Indian students also grew considerably by 35% to 2,800. By contrast, the number of American students increased only slightly, from 5,000 to 5,450.
In the USA, however, the total figure decreased marginally by 2%, from 581,600 to 570,000. The most noticeable change was a 9% fall in the number of Indian students, from 200,000 to 182,000. Meanwhile, the numbers of Chinese and Canadian students rose moderately, by 6% and 7% respectively.
