The bar chart shows changes in the shares of Harbour city tourism in 1970, 1985, and 2000.
Overall, while the figures for city hotel occupancy, adventure tourism, and air travel showed increases, those for coastal hotel occupancy and rail travel declined.
In 1970, more than 40% of tourists stayed in city hotels, double that for adventure tourism at nearly 20%. By 2000, both had increased to about 62% and 50%, respectively. However, the figure for city hotel occupancy was highest in 1985, at close to 80%. Also, nearly 40% of tourists used air travel in 1970, but this rose by approximately 25% in the final year.
At the start of the period, just above 20% of tourists spent nights in coastal hostels. While this percentage increased dramatically to about 90% over 15 years, it then experienced a sharp decline, losing almost 80% by 2000. The proportion of rail travel users, which began at approximately 60%, dropped sharply to around 25% by 2000.
