The chart illustrates data about the contribution of three different sectors, such as agriculture, industry, and services, to India’s GDP from 1960-2000. Units are measured in percentages. Overall, it can be clearly seen that the field of agriculture dramatically fell by the end of the given period. Meanwhile, the opposite was true for the sector of services, which gradually rose over the given period and at the end became equal to the former indicators of agriculture at the beginning of the time shown. It is also worth mentioning that the contribution of the category of industry demonstrated only a slight growth, and then dropped.
Looking at the details, it is clear that the contribution of agriculture to GDP gradually decreased throughout the given years. That is to say, in 1960, it was the only time when the indicators of this category ever exceeded 60%. Until 1990, it had decreased steadily, by 5% in 1970 and around 10% by 1980, and in the latter year stood at around 46%. However, in the following decade, it saw a decline, which equalled the total decrease of previous decades: from approximately 46% to about 31%. Eventually, by the next century, it dropped around threefold: from 31% to just below 10%.
On the other hand, there was an upward trend in terms of agriculture. Before 1980, it had increased from 17% to around 23% by 1970, and by 1980 had also shown a growth, albeit insignificant, and made up just below than 30% to India’s GDP contribution. In the last two decades, the contribution of agriculture skyrocketed more than two times and prevailed 60%.
Meanwhile, the last category – services increased modestly from 15% by 10% from 1960 to 1980, and reached its peak in 25% until the end of the shown period.
