The bar chart below shows the participation of children in selected leisure activities in Australia.

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of kids taking part in different pastimes in Australia, divided by genders.

Overall, while watching TV/videos is preferable to both boys and girls at the age of 5 to 14, the least attractive activity to girls is skateboarding/ rollerblading and to boys, it is art and craft. Another striking point is that more Australian boys are recorded to engage in the listed activities than girls, with higher participation level in all areas except for art and craft.

Watching television and videos proves to be the most popular leisure activity among the children with 100% of boys and girls surveyed confirm to be involved in. On the other hand, skateboarding/ rollerblading is the most uninteresting recreation to young girls as just nearly 30% of the kids enjoyed this activity. Similarly, the percentage of boys aged 5 to 14 engaging in art and craft reaches a low of approximately 40%, making it the least popular leisure activity among the boys.

There are three pastimes in which boys participate more than girls. While 80% of the boys enjoy electronic/ computer games and 75% are attracted to cycling, only 60% of the girls surveyed take up these two activities for entertainment. Regarding skateboarding or rollerblading, the share of boys engaging in this category exceeds that of girls by 10%. In contrast, more girls take part in the remaining recreation which shows a difference of about 20% between the genders, making it the activity witnessing the biggest gap in the kids’ participation level. As much as 35% of boys are involved in this leisure activity in comparison to 55% of girls.
