Overall, both countries experienced a general decrease in birth rates over the period. However, China showed much more ups and downs while the USA had a more stable pattern. By the end of the period birth rates in both countries were quite low, especially in China.
In 1920, the birth rate in the US was slightly higher than in China. During the 1920s and early 1930s both countries saw small increases. In the middle 1930s China reached a highest point of around 15 while the US also increased but at a lower level. After that, birth rates in both countries dropped sharply during the 1940s. A big difference shown around 1950. China’s birth rate increased significantly to about 20 which was the highest point on the graph. The US also rose at this time, but much less than China reaching around 15. After 1950, birth rates in both countries start to decrease again.
