The graph illustrates how the birth rates varied across China and the USA between 1920 and 2000.
Overall, two countries experienced fluctuations and downward trends in the birth rate from 1920 to 2000, with US’s figure was quite higher than China’s in almost every years of the period.
In terms of the first phase (from 1920 to 1945), there was a similar trend observed between the USA and China’s birth rate from 1920 to 1925 before China embarked on rising rapidly in 1935 with 15-year period, while the USA’s figure was about 13-year period. It was not until 1940 that China witnessed a plummet to 5-year period before keeping stably till 1945, whereas the USA’s figure dropped slightly to 12-year period in 1940 and ended up with the same figure of China’s birth rate in 1945 (5-year period).
Regarding the next phase (from 1950 to 2000), both figures started increasing significantly from 5 to 15-year period in the USA and over 20-year period in China after 5 years from 1945. Both figures witnessed downward trends from 1950 to the end of period (2000), with China’s figure was fewer than the USA’s. Although there were increases for both figures in 1995 with around 8-year period for the USA and 3-year period for China, they immediately fall down in the end of the period.
