The chart illustrates information about the value, in Australian dollars, of Australian trade with three different countries between 2004 and 2009.
Overall, it is clear that imports and exports are the highest with China, while with Japan, imports are less compared to exports. Japan has the highest exports with Australia.
Firstly, with China, imports started at 20 billion A$. Further, they rose to 30 billion A$ in 2008 and then hardly changed at the end of the period. When it comes to exports, they started around 10 billion A$ and witnessed a significant increase, reaching about 35 billion A$ in 2009.
On the other hand, imports with Japan and the US remained stable over the period, at approximately 20 billion A$ in 2004 and almost unchanged in 2009, respectively. Exports with Japan were always higher than imports and dramatically increased from 2004 to 2008, before falling to 30 billion A$ in 2009. Moreover, Japan’s exports reached their highest point at 40 billion A$ in 2008. However, exports with the US were the least over the period (around 10 billion) and remained constant until 2009.
