The table illustrates the expenditure of Turkey (in percentages) allocated to 5 different categories from 1960 to 2000.
Overall, almost all categories witnessed a downward trend, with the exception of clothing. It is worth noticing that clothing became the leading share by the end of the period.
In 1960, food consumption was the largest category, accounting for 35%. However, it dropped to 15% by the end of analysed period, making it the second place category. Leisure time started at 20 percent and then it declined to just above 10% by the year of 2000. Transport facilities made up 10 per cent in 1960 and 40 years later it plunged to just under 5 percent. With regard to energy, it followed a considerable plummet, dropping gradually from 5 percent to nearly 1 percent.
In contrast, clothing was the only share that increased strikingly. Starting at just under 10% to nearly doubling its initial figure, reaching just under 20% by the end of period.
