The bar chart illustrates assessed world literacy rates in six regions and for two sexes in 2000.
Overall, developed countries had the highest number of the literacy, while South Asia had the lowest level, also in all regions females were less educated than males.
In developed countries only about 1 male and 2 female were illiteracy and it was the lowest figure between other regions. After developed countries accounting at about 10 male and 12 female were without basic education. East Asia/Oceania showed about 8 men and 20 women illiterateness. Sub-Saharan Africa (31 male and 48 female) and Arab States (29 men and 52 women) were estimated at similar rate of literacy. South Asia had about 33 male and 56 female were without basic education and it was the lowest rate between regions.
Regarding gender, all regions showed that there were more literateness men than females. The gap between genders were similar in all regions except developed countries and Latin America/Caribbean.
