Overall, the illiteracy rates were calculated in developed countries and five other nations. It is clear that estimations of the inability to read and write were higher among females than males in all the countries.
Looking closely into details, it can be seen that the illiteracy rates of both genders in developed countries, standing less than 10 percent. When it comes to Latin America, the percentage of illiterate females was more than 10 while illiterate males were 10 percent. In addition to that, women who could not write or read accounted for 20 percent, however men who were not literate amounted to less than 10 percent.
When it comes to Sub-Saharan Africa, illiteracy rates were higher than that in previous countries. Estimated illiterate women totalled almost 50 percent, while men accounting for 30 percent. In Arab states and South Asia, illiteracy rates were comparatively higher. In the former, there were more than 50 percent illiterate females and less than 30 percent males. In the latter, females with no literacy skills stood for 55 percent while men accounted for 35 percent.
