Dear Ahmit,

I was over the moon to get your invitation to your birthday party! Sadly, I won’t be able to make it this time.

We’ve got an urgent meeting coming up at work on the same day, and there’s just no way I can skip it. I’d actually planned to take the day off weeks ago, but this meeting popped up out of nowhere and it’s compulsory for everyone to attend.

I’m also really sorry for not letting you know earlier. I’ve been buried under a huge project at work, and this meeting was only confirmed today. I just found out a few hours ago when I checked my emails.

Anyway, I’ve got something for you. If you’re free next Saturday, would you like to go to the carnival happening in Toronto with me? It’ll be the perfect way to make up for missing your big day, and we can spend some proper time together.

Once again, I’m really sorry for missing such a special day, but I promise we’ll celebrate in style on Saturday!
