The day after your party I have a business meeting in Paris, which was initially scheduled for that afternoon. So my plan was to catch an early morning train to Paris. However, a week ago the meeting was moved forward to 9 am. This means I have to go there on the night of the celebration.
I didn’t contact you earlier because there was a slight possibility that the meeting would be cancelled altogether. Now I see that I left it for too long and might have inconvenienced you with such a late cancellation. If this is the case, I’m really sorry.
Despite not being able to come, I still have a little something for you. If you don’t have any other plans, I’d love to invite you for lunch somewhere in the city this weekend. Please let me know if you’re available.
I wish you a wonderful birthday and am looking forward to seeing you very soon.
Dear Tanya,
I was delighted to receive an invitation to your birthday party but, unfortunately, I won’t be able to come.
Lots of love,
Walter
