In this essay, I will examine the disadvantages faced by such individuals and suggest potential solutions that governments can implement to address this problem.

It has been suggested that adults who lack literacy skills encounter various social and economic disadvantages. Professionally, illiteracy limits job opportunities, as most positions require basic reading and writing abilities, leading to unemployment or low-paying jobs. Socially, they face difficulties in understanding critical documents such as contracts, medical prescriptions, or even daily communication. This can result in dependency on others and a lack of self-confidence. Furthermore, their inability to engage with written content prevents them from accessing vital information, such as healthcare guidelines or financial literacy. For instance, research from UNESCO highlights that illiterate adults are more likely to live below the poverty line, as they cannot qualify for jobs requiring even minimal education.

On the flip side, governments must adopt proactive measures to eradicate adult illiteracy. Launching free or subsidized adult education programs tailored to their schedules can provide opportunities to learn without financial burdens. Raising awareness through public campaigns about the importance of literacy can motivate individuals to seek help. Collaborations with NGOs and community centers can create local hubs for literacy training. Additionally, introducing technology-driven initiatives like mobile apps or online courses can make learning more accessible. For example, countries like Finland and South Korea have implemented nationwide adult education initiatives, significantly reducing illiteracy rates through flexible classes and government incentives.

It is said that while the inability to read and write presents severe challenges for individuals in professional and social contexts, governments play a crucial role in addressing this issue.
