With the rapid pace of urbanisation, increasing proportion of the population living in cities, traffic becomes a common problem in big cities. As one of solutions, government attempts to implement taxes for peak traffic periods. I am convinced that this action will have positive effect on the long-term scale.
Firstly, by applying taxes demand for using cars would dramatically decrease. Costs of car services, including repair, insurance and upgrading, are already high. Combining fuel costs increasing and applying of the taxes, it will no longer be cost-efficient to use a car. This would reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, easing traffic congestion and allowing people to reach their destinations more quickly. Thus, despite that some time must pass, traffic jams issue would peter out over time.
Moreover, fiscal policy applied would have beneficial impact on the ecology. Air pollution is one of the most common and potentially dangerous problems faced in megacities. If taxes shifted trends in favor of green public transport, amount of greenhouse gases will significantly drop. Not only people but also ecosystem will benefit from that. For this reason, the government method may have other side advantages.
To conclude, imposing tax for cars can potentially solve issue of overloaded roads, while contributing additional positive impact. I believe that this step will have positive development and build humanity’s future.
