Band 7+: 📝TASK 2: In some countries, the government has tried to reduce traffic. For instance, they imposed a congestion tax during rush hour. Do you think this development is positive or negative?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s rapidly changing world, the government in some countries has tried to reduce traffic by imposing a congestion tax during rush hours. This has become a considerable topic of debate. While some people believe that traffic congestion is a serious problem in our society, others believe that following traffic rules may reduce traffic congestion. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining my own opinion.

On the one hand, the major reason why congestion tax can be positive is that people may often use public transport rather than private vehicles. This is because the government increases the cost of using private transport, which creates an extra cost for individuals. As a result, people may choose public transport to save money, which can be more convenient for them. For example, some newspapers in Germany have reported that many people use public transport rather than private vehicles because the government has increased charges for private transport. Therefore, this policy may reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, which helps people reach their destinations more easily.

On the other hand, the main drawback is that congestion taxes may particularly affect low-income workers who need to travel during rush hours. This is mainly because some low-income workers may not have enough money to pay the additional charges regularly. As a result, this policy may create financial difficulties for low-income people. For instance, a low-income worker who has to pay a congestion charge every day may face a significant financial burden at the end of the month. Therefore, this policy may make it harder for some low-income people to manage their monthly expenses.

In conclusion, although congestion taxes may create financial difficulties for low-income people, I believe that this is a positive development because it can reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads. It may also reduce traffic congestion and air pollution and help people reach their destinations more easily.
