It is sometimes argued that classes should be formed according to students’ abilities. I believe it is a desirable change.
This trend however, can offer several drawbacks with the education equality taking the hardest hit and can promote of eliticism. First and foremost, this change can cause a harm for education equality. If students grouped into classes according to their academic ability low achievers’ rights to gain the equal amount of knowledge will be infringed. Additionally, this change promotes eliticism, and makes a wider gap between classes in society. Eliticm may negatively affect the morale of low achievers leading to further increase in a disparity between theirs academic performance.
On the other hand, it offers several advantages. To start with, dividing students to classes according to their ability increases competition and enhances progress. If students are among with their equal ability peers, they study more to keep up with them. In order to achieve certain rewards such as grants and scholarships students try to excel their skills. Furthermore, low proportion of high achievers in a class may demotive them since there will be no competitors to compete. In such classes teachers conduct lessons for “middle class” to promote equal education, and this can give high achievers an insight that they do not need to study further. Their brain may tick the progress if it knows it did the best and stops advancing.
In conclusion, admittedly some individuals believe it is better to group students according to their academic performance. Whereas some people think it has downsides like harm to education equality, and it may promote eliticism, I believe that it is a positive development with benefits such as increased competition and enhanced progress.
