Band 8+: A. Agree or Disagree: In order to reduce crime, we need to attack the causes of crime such as poverty and lack of educational opportunities. It is not enough to simply have more police on the street and put more people into prison.

In today’s world, numerous illegal activities are occurring across the globe. Some citizens may believe that simply increasing the number of police officers and targeting more terrorists can solve this problem. However, it is widely accepted that the well-being of communities and the education of the population are significantly more important than the measures mentioned above. The following reasons will elaborate on this perspective.

Firstly, having sufficient financial resources and a high level of education helps individuals develop sound judgment and rational instincts. This leads them to make better choices and refrain from engaging in illegal activities. In other words, a decrease in crime can be achieved through an educated and financially stable population. For example, there tends to be a significantly lower rate of robbery in upper-class neighborhoods filled with affluent and educated residents. Therefore, governments should strive to provide stable jobs and access to quality universities for everyone under their jurisdiction.

Secondly, merely punishing offenders is not an effective solution to reducing the number of criminal acts, as this often leads to further communication among offenders in prison. This can create a cycle of crime and exacerbate the problem. For instance, many reports highlight individuals who repeatedly commit crimes, with prior offenses appearing in their criminal records. Consequently, addressing the root causes of crime should take precedence over simply detaining young offenders.

In conclusion, our world is facing a plethora of ethical challenges. To reduce the prevalence of crime, governments should provide adequate income and opportunities for skill development to all citizens. On the contrary, merely incarcerating more criminals will not eliminate the problem. Ultimately, individuals can also contribute to a safer society by being law-abiding citizens.
