Mastering mathematic know-how is not essential for a majority of professional positions in the current era. I partly agree with this view.
There are a great number of jobs that do not require maths knowledge, such as nurses, security guards, translators, interpreters, and so on. For these kinds of jobs, as long as people can master what it takes to fulfill these roles’ obligations, there is no need for them to learn mathematics any more. That is why some people argue that the subject is not vital any longer. For some disciplines, it is true, while for other areas, this is not the case. For example, in fields like fundamental Physics or Mathematics, math expertise is a must if one wants to go deeper in such areas. Some may argue that these disciplines are only limited, thus they just overlook the fact that such elementary subjects lay a concrete foundation upon which a host of courses can thrive. For instance, Applied Math is a branch of these primary subjects and it has a variety of usages. Even though these prime courses only account for a little proportion of all areas, their influence is far-reaching. That is why individuals cannot overlook the importance of those root subjects. Take Huawei, a Chinese technology giant company, for example. In recent years, the company paid around 200 million RMB as annual salary for those fresh graduates whose majors are exactly these above-mentioned fields. In addition, the enterprise commits serious financial resources to employing scientists who research these basic disciplines. Therefore, it is known that how paramount these subjects are, given the colossal investment the head corporation has made to these areas.
In conclusion, my perspective is that there are some professionals that require no knowledge of maths; basic mathematics and other elementary subjects do play a key role in supporting the development of other areas, so persons cannot underestimate them.
