Many countries around the world heavily depend on tourism as a primary revenue generator. However, inadequate management of tourism can lead to various issues. In this essay, both sides of the argument, that is, the advantages and disadvantages, will be elaborated to reach a conclusion.
Moving on to the conveniences provided by the tourism industry, there are two major ones. Firstly, tourism generates direct income through spending by tourists on accommodation, meals, transportation, attractions and souvenirs. For example, a family visiting a national park might spend money on lodging, guided tours, meals at local restaurants and gifts from gift shops. Secondly, the tourism industry is a major employer, offering a wide range of job opportunities. Direct employment in tourism includes roles in hotels, restaurants, tour companies, airlines and attractions. For instance, a new hotel opening in a tourist destination creates jobs not only for hotel staff but also for suppliers, construction workers ans service providers.
On the other hand, there are some drawbacks too. Mass tourism can lead to environmental degradation, including pollution, deforestation, habitat loss and damage to sensitive ecosystems and wildlife habitats. For example, tourism in coastal areas can harm natural habitats. Building resorts and infrastructure to accommodate tourists often means destroying ecosystems like mangrove forests and coral reefs, threatening the survival of local wildlife. Moreover, tourism may result in the commodification of local culture. For instance, traditional crafts and artifacts are often produced with cheap materials, losing their cultural significance and authenticity. They become mere commercial goods for sale rather than representatives of local cultures’ rich heritage and skilled craftmanship.
In conclusion, while the tourism industry offers numerous advantages, including growth of national income and creation of job opportunities, it also presents significant challenges and disadvantages, such as environmental degradation and cultural commodification.
