Band 7+: A number of countries use fossil fuels, such as coal or oil, as their main sources of energy. However, in some countries, the use of alternative sources of energy is encouraged. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

While fossil fuels are still used globally as the main source of energy, the use of sustainable energy has become a trend in some countries. Personally, I believe that this is a great evolution for both the environment and future energy demands.

One of the main reasons why reducing the use of unsustainable energy and replacing it with alternative resources is an advancement is that it will greatly benefit the environment. When fossil fuels are burnt, they release a huge amount of greenhouse gases, which trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. Replacing them with alternatives will reduce the global warming caused by these gases, since these renewables can produce little to no harmful emission to the environment. As a result, this improves the current environmental conditions.

Moreover, unlike fossil fuels taking millions of years to reform and being consumed at an unsustainable rate, using renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydropower can provide a more continuous supply of power. These sources are constantly renewed by the natural processes, for example, solar energy harnesses the sun’s inexhaustible power. Transitioning into these energy sources also preserves the little amount of fuels remaining, since we can reduce our dependence on unsustainable energy. This replacement is crucial for humans, as it will lead to advancement in green technology, creating more job opportunities for people.

In conclusion, although fossil fuels are still the main energy consumption, alternatives are bringing a greater development for countries that are using them, in preserving the environment and the amount of energy sources remaining. I believe this evolution will bring a positive outcome, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Although numerous countries consider fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas to be primary sources, there are an increasing number of countries consuming alternative sources. There seems to be an increasing number of serious crimes committed each year. While some think the best way is to use the death penalty as a deterrent, many people believe that other measures will be needed. Discuss both sides.

It is often argued that the increasing number of serious crimes should be tackled by using the death penalty, others, however, believe that alternative measures are necessary. Although capital punishment can act as a deterrent to some serious offences, I believe that prevention and rehabilitation are also essential to reduce crime in the long term. […]

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Some people believe that capital punishment should not be used. Others, however, argue that it should be allowed for the most serious crimes. Discuss both views and give your opinion. You should write at least 250 words.

Capital punishment remains as one of the most controversial forms of criminal punishment. Some people argue that death penalty should be abolished because it is irreversible and potentially unjust, while others believe that it is justified for exceptionally serious offences. In my view, although the desire to impose the harshest punishment possible on dangerous offenders […]

Many governments have banned single-use plastics to reduce environmental pollution. What are the advantages and disadvantages of banning plastic? Do the benefits of this outweigh the drawbacks?

To reduce environmental degradation, numerous authorities have begun charging substantial taxes on plastic bags and other single-use plastic. While there are certain merits to this practice, it also carries notable downsides, however I believe advantages of this policy outweigh its disadvantages, as it protects the environment and changes consumer habits.
