Band 7+: Air traffic is increasingly leading to more noise, pollution and airport construction. One reason for this is the growth in low-cost passenger flights, often to holiday destination. Some people say that governments should try to reduce air traffic by taxing it more heavily. Do you agree or disagree?

The proclivity for air travel has experienced an upward trend in recent years and the advent of inexpensive flights is believed to result in first-hand issues like noise, pollution and so on. Some people argue that increasing taxes can curb this problem. However, I totally disagree with this solution owing to unemployment and people’s demand.

To begin with, the rate of unemployment will rise as air travel is no longer the priority when the number of flights decreases due to high taxes. A point worth noting is that air travel creates substantial income for each and every nation’s economy as well as providing more employment opportunities to the nation’s workforce. Therefore, reducing this form of transport may lead to a decline (spiral, downfall) in a country’s budget and a redundancy in the labor force. As a result, social instability will appear because of an increasing proportion of unemployed citizens.

Moreover, it is apparent that holiday is an essential part of life, thus government taxes on air traffic heavily will not deter people’s need to travel. The higher air traffic taxation is, the more people rely on other forms of transport such as public and private ones. While passengers paying higher prices for flying tickets are still contributing to the flow of air traffic, a soaring number of other vehicles is likely to emit tons of carbon dioxide from exhaustion fumes into the atmosphere. Consequently, this results in worsening (deteriorating) air quality. Furthermore, the aforementioned air pollution severely damages people’ health and wellbeing, as well as creating noise problems in their surroundings.

In conclusion, restraining the growth of this field is not a feasible remedy, by contrast, it creates more issues to be answered. To tackle the situation, alternatives have to be found rather than rising air traffic taxes.
