Band 5+: Anumber of tertiary courses require students to undertake a period of unpaid work at an institution or organisation as part of their programme. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of course requirement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In this day and age, students are made to implement chargeless work at companies or organizations as a part of their educational curriculum. This essay will explore the benefits and drawbacks of this tendency.

On the one hand, taking unpaid work offers several advantages for students during their studying period. Initially, working unpaid for companies and organizations is one of the effective ways for students to reinforce their understanding and knowledge of their major. This is because they may immediately revise and apply what they have learned at university to boost their productivity at the workplace. As a result, they can spend less time reviewing for important examinations at university and gain comprehensive knowledge to pass the exam with good grades, which improves their academic performance. Additionally, nowadays, due to the competitive job markets, experienced students who have become trainees before may gain more job opportunities after graduating from university. They are similar to the workplace environment and accustomed to the workplace norms, which boosts their acceptance rate to work in the companies.

On the other hand, despite the realistic nature of unpaid work, it actually could bring some obstacles and problems. Firstly, students are required to meet the deadline of the tasks, build lots of relationships with colleges, and learn about the regulations, which sometimes put them under heavy pressure, especially if they are just beginners. Moreover, students may have difficulty in managing their time for work, study, and personal lives, in case they cannot balance their work-life, it is easy for them to suffer from lacking sleep, and dietary changes. As a result, they can suffer from serious tension and depression, affecting detrimentally to their mental health. What is more, it can cost students a great amount of time, effort, and money to commute to work. Nowadays, due to stagnant inflation, the cost of transportation has increased significantly, causing problems for individuals to commute if they come from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. This would result in their inability to control their financial stability for their educational fee or cost of living when they are learning at university.

In conclusion, undertaking chargeless work as a part of the course programs possesses several benefits including improved academic performance and higher job opportunities, while, there are still some drawbacks that need to be considered such as devastating effects on mental health and students’ unbalanced financial statement
