It is argued by many individuals about the academic benefits of single-sex schools and social advantages of mixed-gender schools. In my opinion, I agree with both aforementioned views.
To begin with, there are a variety of advantages for students in single-sex school, the initial of which is academic results. Firstly, boys and girls absorb knowledge in different ways, for example : boys learn better through movement, sound and touch whereas girls learn better through visual and oral means. Therefore, each gender needs different types of teaching to adapt to knowledge more easily, which leads to enhance academic outcomes. Secondly, the absence of the opposite sex can create an environment free from the concerns about sexual harassment or negative behavior, thereby fostering greater self-confidence and courage to involve in a wider range of academic pursuits.
On the other hand, there are also many merits of co-educational environment. For instance, the interaction with different viewpoints from both genders can develop a diverse mindset among students, which is particularly advantageous when they entering the workplace in adulthood. Moreover, students can facilitate strong relationships and effective communication skills by associate with various groups of people in co-educational school. As a result, social integration is prepared beforehand for the future.
In conclusion, although single-sex school is beneficial due to higher academic, the advantages of co-gendered school such as the preparation for workplace and social integration, should not be underestimated.
