Many find that art classes, such as painting and drawing, are necessary for the improvement of children just like other subjects, which is why they should be compulsory in school. Despite the arguments in support of this view, I oppose it for several compelling reasons, which will be elaborated upon in this essay.
First and foremost, I believe that art-based classes play a crucial role, just like other subjects such as Math or Physics. Although math and physics assist in enhancing intellectual performance, painting and drawing help facilitate the foundation of emotional performance. Moreover, it is undeniable that painting is crucial for the overall development of children, as it makes them more sophisticated and also acts as a form of therapy when they feel stressed after hectic schedules at school. In other words, without subjects related to thinking such as math and physics, the contribution of art may not be fully maximized; in the worst-case scenario, this could lead to job loss and even failure in this modern era.
In addition to this, the roles assigned to painting are often narrower and less demanding in terms of decision-making, financial accountability, and the abilities to be applied in real-life work situations. Academic subjects not only boost critical thinking but are also applied in fields that require a high level of expertise, such as engineering or medicine – occupations that need to work with numbers for long periods. As a result, art should be an optional subject at schools for students who find it pleasurable.
In conclusion, the contribution of art is undoubtedly important. However, I am of the opinion that it is not as significant as other subjects and should not be compulsory.
