As our contemporary era is characterized by the prevalence of technology, Artificial Intelligence is widely utilised in many fields. While this modern device is believed to eliminate all toxic and harmful content on social media, many argue that using such a tool can potentially censor valid opinions. Both viewpoints will be exhaustively elaborated in the following essay, before my personal stance is asserted.
There are, admittedly, convincing benefits that AI provides humans with. To commence with, utilizing AI in managing online content can mitigate social engineering attacks. In fact, the nefarious plot has been diversified to such a level that only technological gadgets are capable of handling. These illustrious state-of-the-arts leverage their functions to phishing detection, analysing emails, websites, voices and calls to refrain internet users from being defrauded. For instance, AI has the ability to check whether a website has a valid SSL certificate, legitimate websites are likely to use https and ssl certificates. If not, those are illegal ones, and media users are suspended from entering those malicious websites. Besides, applying AI into managing media is cost-effective. In the past years, human moderators were required to supervise activities of every organization, every webpage traditionally, which the cost associated with compensating the staff appears to be quite high. Instead, Intelligent retrieval is effectively used to deal with such works meticulously and simultaneously.
Opponents for the opposition view may be worried that AI may go beyond its acceptable limits and exert several demerits to the society. Firstly, a purposeful organization may abuse AI automatic-filtering tools to spread prejudice against a run hate campaign against a well-known figure. Therefore, creating faulty impressions of the general populace’s opinion of that figure, which can intentionally form a cancel culture, poses a risk to increase toxicity of media where the role of AI is minimized. Additionally, censoring various content may enlarge the lack of acknowledging the right and the wrong, especially children. In specific, observing excessive filtered videos content without the guidance from parents and teachers may cause children to have confusion about what is truly acceptable and moral in the real world. This can result in them struggling to recognize or respond to any social problems (bullying, misinformation, defraudation, etc), which make them more vulnerable to manipulation or engaging in harmful behavior without fully understanding the impact.
