Globalization has become a more prevalent issue as technology and transport advance. While some people are worried that cultural identity might be at stake, I do not believe that globalization will lead to total loss of cultural identity.
Opponents are concerned because Western cultures influenced and affected us in various aspects nowadays. For instance, even though we are not Christians or Catholics, we still celebrate Christmas and Black Friday. People started to weigh more on these festivals rather than their own festivals. Particularly, younger generations have no idea on preparations and taboos of their own festivals as they believe that they are too complicated and unimportant. Furthermore, traditional costumes are left out and people are more interested in costumes brought in from Western countries. The number of people who wear ceongsam, sari and baju kurung decreased significantly over the years and.
However, I believed that government can play a significant role in protecting his country’s cultural identity. Government should hold events during important festivals in the community and school. This is utterly important as the most effective way to preserve our cultural identity is by letting more people learn about the customs and traditions of a culture. At the same time, teachers can educate students about stories behind each taboos. For example, during Chinese New Year, firecrackers is known to scare away a monster called Nian and ensure everyone’s safety.
All in all, I believed that there are still measures to prevent cultural identity from totally fading away and government are mainly responsible for this.
