In contemporary society, the issue of whether GM crops should be cultivated globally has ignited considerable debate. While some maintain that GM crops cause harmful effects on both human life and nature, others reject this notion, believing that this practice leads to a more healthy life. Personally, while it is true that GM crops can be disadvantageous, I wholeheartedly believe that the opposite side is more beneficial. This essay will discuss both views and provide reasons for my support of the latter opinion.
On the one hand, there are several disadvantages of genetically modified crops, namely presenting potential health risks and affecting biodiversity. In fact, because GM food contains DNA from other organisms, it is possible that new DNA can trigger allergies in people who would not normally be allergic to specific food. Furthermore, studies have shown that GM corn leads to the development of kidney and liver problems in rats, which could potentially impact human health; this, in turn, illustrates the unpredictable nature of GM crops in living things. Naturally, it is true that existing species can be overrun by more dominant new species. This also explains the plausible occurrence of GM seeds spreading to neighboring fields, posing a threat to non-GM crops.
On the other hand, cultivating genetically modified crops offers a multitude of significant advantages, including increased productivity as well as enhanced nutritional content. Indeed, genetically modified crops are able to survive stressful conditions, such as droughts, floods, while simultaneously growing more efficiently, thus resulting in higher yields for farmers. By outperforming conventional crops through energy and resource conservation, GM crops could help lower food prices, ultimately contributing to addressing the problem of hunger in the world. Additionally, certain GM crops are designed to provide more nutrients like vitamins or minerals; thus, they can be particularly beneficial in regions where people suffer from nutritional deficiencies.
In conclusion, while some people argue that GM crops lead to negative consequences such as possible health risk and the loss in biodiversity, I strongly believe that the advantages it brings outweigh its disadvantages, by enhancing yields and superior nutritional benefits, GM crops are able to offer a more sustainable, healthy life.
