Band 7+: Children are influenced by their friend's opinions. In what ways are children affected by their friends? How can parents make sure this influence is positive?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The influence of friendships is particularly strong during childhood and can significantly shape a child’s thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes. This essay will discuss the various ways in which children are influenced by their peers and how parents can ensure that this impact remains positive.

Children are often curious about their friends’ behaviors and tend to adopt these habits over time. For instance, before forming a close bond with her best friend, my niece was a quiet child who focused primarily on her schoolwork. However, after spending more time with her friend, she became less interested in academics and began devoting more of her time to playing video games, a hobby her friend was passionate about. Furthermore, children often adopt specific phrases and expressions used by their peers, incorporating them into their own language. For example, some children may start using inappropriate language after hearing swear words from their friends, simply out of curiosity or the desire to fit in.

Before determining whether the influence is beneficial or harmful, parents should observe their child’s behavior over a period of time. If parents notice that their child’s friends are having a negative influence, they should calmly explain the potential consequences of adopting such habits. However, it is important that parents approach the situation with understanding, offering guidance through constructive conversations rather than resorting to forceful methods such as forbidding friendships or punishing the child. For example, my niece has not used any inappropriate language she learned from her friends for quite some time, as her parents took the time to explain the reasons why she should avoid such expressions.

In conclusion, children often mimic their peers’ behaviors and language, which can be reflected in their own actions and attitudes. Parents should carefully assess the influence of friendships on their children, considering whether the effects are positive or negative after a period of observation.
