Band 7+: Children spend too much time watching TV and playing computer games. However, it does not help in improving their mental abilities. Do you agree or disagree?

The prevalence of teenagers being engrossed in watching TV and playing computer games has become a significant aspect of contemporary society. It is argued by some that children devote an excessive amount of time to these activities, which in turn fails to enhance their cognitive abilities. I firmly support this viewpoint and will elaborate on the reasons behind my agreement.

There are several compelling reasons why I believe that youngsters are inclined towards spending an excessive amount of time watching TV and playing computer games. Firstly, in the fast-paced life of today, adolescents feel the need to stay updated with current affairs and expand their knowledge base. This often leads them to focus excessively on television programs and gaming, neglecting other essential aspects of their lives, which can have a detrimental impact on their cognitive development. For instance, an over-reliance on screen time can result in decreased attention spans and reduced cognitive capabilities.

Moreover, another contributing factor to this phenomenon is the role of computer games as a stress-reliever for young individuals. Following a taxing day at school, many children seek solace in the virtual world of games to unwind with their peers. However, this practice, if unchecked, can foster a sedentary lifestyle and deter them from engaging in physical activities that are vital for their overall well-being. Encouraging children to strike a balance between screen time and outdoor activities can help mitigate the negative repercussions of excessive gaming.

Additionally, a critical aspect to consider is the detrimental impact of prolonged TV viewing on children’s physical and mental well-being. Sedentary behaviors associated with prolonged screen time not only lead to physical health issues but also impair cognitive functions. The lack of physical movement while watching TV can hinder brain development and overall cognitive performance in children.

In conclusion, while some argue that children benefit from exploring educational content online and that screen time helps them unwind and learn, I am inclined to agree that excessive reliance on TV and computer games can impede cognitive development and physical well-being. It is imperative for parents to monitor and guide their children towards a balanced routine that includes physical activities to ensure holistic development and well-being.
