Band 5+: Children today spend a lot of time on social media. What potential problems could this cause and how could they be addressed?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s digital era, many children became immersed in social media platforms, spending an excessive amount of their time on playing video games. This can lead to several problems, including a poor academic performance, sleep disturbance and social isolation. However, this can be tackled by some strategies which I will explain in the following paragraphs.

The first problem can be arisen by engaging with social media is a poor academic performance. There are some platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and telegram, which have gained more popularity among children, cause them to kill their invaluable time and have negative impacts on their studies. In turn, they cannot fully concentrate on the lessons they take at school. Another problem which social media creates is sleep disturbance. As social media offers more online video games and apps for children, they spend a lot of time on playing video games even at nights, which causes them having inadequate amount of sleep. This also can lead to another potential health risks later on. Furthermore, spending more time on social media decreases the number of social interactions and the time allocated for family and friends.

Nevertheless, despite having some serious problems, there are several techniques to address this problem. First and foremost, offering more offline activities can be the best way to make children less engaged with social media and spend their time on social activities instead, which prevents some health issues. Secondly, children spend less amount of time on social media if they are offered educational programs at schools, which teach them the negative effects of internet and diseases created by spending a lot of time on social media apps. As long as these methods are implemented, we can save our children’s future life. The less time spent on social media, the more active and healthy children will be.

In a nutshell, although spending a myriad of time on social media has more negative consequences, offering more offline activities and educational programs which teach the disadvantages of social media platforms for their well-being can be the best solutions to this common problem.
