Recently, a majority of people have shown a preference for living in the city rather than in the countryside. Although everyone has their own views about city life and rural life, it is undeniable that there are three significant differences between urban and rural areas: cost of living, environment, and job opportunities.
It is obvious that the cost of living in metropolitan areas is considerably higher than in the countryside, particularly regarding housing, medical care, and goods. First, owning a house or an apartment in the city can be extremely expensive. Housing in urban areas requires people to have a substantial income. For instance, in Hanoi, if you want to purchase an average apartment, it will cost you around 2.8 billion VND, or about ten years of continuous work. In contrast, buying a large house in the countryside typically costs only a third of the price for a similar property in an urban area. Second, cities provide modern hospitals equipped with skilled doctors and nurses, leading to higher costs for patients seeking better services. In contrast, rural areas have much lower healthcare expenses due to their older equipment and therapies. Lastly, economic disparities make goods in the city cost twice as much as in the countryside.
The differences in the environment between urban and rural areas are significant. To meet the demands of city dwellers, factories and vehicle production have increased, resulting in higher levels of exhaust fumes and industrial waste. These wastes contribute to pollution problems that are urgent in many countries. In contrast, the countryside benefits its inhabitants with fresher air, greener spaces, and cleaner water sources.
Another major difference between city and rural life is job opportunities. Residents of rural areas often migrate to cities due to the dwindling job market. With a vast number of businesses and countless employers, workers can find a variety of workplaces and higher salaries that align with their skills and interests. While the countryside has been industrializing to provide its residents with more job opportunities, it still typically offers lower salaries and requires greater effort from its employees.
The world has been developing toward perfection, narrowing the gap between life in the countryside and in the city. However, the differences in cost of living, environment, and job opportunities remain largely unchanged. People should consider these disparities to lead a fulfilling life.
