It is often believed that building Wider Roads can help prevent Traffic Congestion. In my opinion, while this is one way to reduce traffic issues, it is not the only way and therefore other measures might be helpful.
Constructing Wider Roads could certainly help in reducing the Problems of Traffic Congestion particularly in the rush hours. Most developed cities around the world have wider roads with around 3 to 6 lanes which can handle more traffic. Consequently, the construction of wider Roads can theoretically reduce congestion. Such roads can facilitate faster and easier ways of transportation and significantly reduce the chances of congestion during the peak rush hours. But, considering the fact that traffic is managed well by authorities.
While Wider Roads can be one of the best ways, but it comes with some restriction that many cities have, is the limited space available for improving the roads, this issue is mostly prominent in older cities that have developed, and their population increased rapidly. In such cases, the expansion can be done either above or below the surface. One such example is the city of Kolkata in India. It is a historical city which saw rapid increase in population and thus requirement to build more roads and expansion of road network was done by constructing Flyover bridges throughout the city which acted as a savior and helped maintain traffic.
To conclude, constructing wider roads, flyover bridges or tunnels can ensure traffic reduction in traffic congestion and help mobilization of traffic smoothly.
