Hosting international sporting events has become increasingly common, with many countries competing for the opportunity to organize them. While some people believe that such events bring significant economic and social benefits, others argue that they impose considerable financial and environmental costs.
To commence with the merits of hosting major international sporting events, one of the primary advantages is that they boost the economy by attracting tourists and generating employment opportunities. Secondly, it also improves infrastructure, such as roads, airports and sports facilities, which continue to benefit citizens even after the event. For example, countries hosting the Olympic Games often experience increased tourism and better public transport systems. In addition, these events enhance a nation’s international reputation and promote national pride.
Nevertheless, hosting major international sporting events has its own demerits that should be considered. First of all, organising such events requires enormous financial investment, which may put a burden on the government’s budget. Furthermore, it has an adverse impact on the environment due to large-scale construction projects and increased carbon emissions. For instance, several stadiums become underutilised after the event, resulting in unnecessary maintenance costs. Apart from this, these challenges can be minimised through proper planning and efficient management, making the overall benefits more significant than the drawbacks.
In conclusion, while hosting major sporting events involves certain financial and environmental challenges, I firmly believe that the long-term economic, social and infrastructural benefits outweigh these disadvantages. Therefore, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages, particularly in the long term.
