Recent breakthroughs and innovations in technology have made it easier to detect and deter crimes. While technology can help to reduce crime rates, from my perspective, I believe that offenders can also benefit from technology.
On the one hand, technology plays an important role in detection and investigation of crimes. The surveillance camera system is effective technological equipment that empowers the police to monitor crimes and enhance social security. For instance, in China with the help of the surveillance system that able to recognize individuals’ identities by their face have reduced crime rates significantly. Moreover, digital softwares such as DNA analysis has revolutionized forensic science by enabling law enforcement agencies to identify suspects with a high degree of accuracy.
On the other hand, as our world becomes more and more digitalized, criminals abuse technological achievements and generate different ways for illegal activities. Firstly, nowadays there are numerous scammers on the internet that tries to trick people to get access to their bank account and as the people become aware of it, offenders enhance their methods that abuse people’s trust and feelings. For example, recently scammers have used artificial intelligence to trick people by generating their friend’s or family member’s voice to get bank data. Furthermore, cyberbullying is a growing concern on social media platforms, where individuals can harass or insult others anonymously, often leading to serious emotional and psychological harm.
By way of the conclusion, whereas new technologies provide more effective and accurate prevention and investigation, it is unlikely that crime rates will fall in the future because of the criminals who take advantage of technologies for illegal activities.
