Band 6+: Cycling is becoming more popular in large cities around the world and more people are switching to this method of transportation. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this trend and give your opinion.

In modern times more people are trying to find alternative methods of transport in large cities such as Mexico City. People are increasingly moving away from four-wheeled transport in favour of bicycles. Is this a positive trend?

There are many advantages to travelling by bicycle in Mexico City. A principal reason is that you can generally travel across the city much faster than other transport and therefore cycling can be the most reliable option for many workers. For example, cars often get stuck in traffic jams and two-hour journeys between home and work are common. Additionally, the local government is helping cyclists with different programmes that have recently started. One example is the construction of bike lanes along major roads, also each Sunday the centre of the city is closed all morning for cyclists.

However, there are also many reasons why cycling is not a good option for Mexico City residents. The main reason is that cycling in Mexico City is considered to be downright dangerous. One reason for this is that Mexicans do not need to pass a test in order to drive, consequently drivers tend to ignore traffic signals and sometimes not notice cyclists. Moreover, Mexico City experiences a rainy season between June and September in the evening rush hour. This results in uncomfortable conditions for cyclists as they get wet and makes conditions more dangerous.

In my opinion, I feel that overall, the advantages of cycling in Mexico City outweigh the disadvantages. We can avoid traffic, travel from A to B much faster and more reliably and with new initiatives by government, it will only get better. Despite all of this, we must always remember to take precautions such as wearing a helmet.
