For as long as I remember I was always misunderstood by everyone, especially by my intelligence. Recently a situation with my close friends put me in unexpected and hurtful situation.
It was a normal hangout after school, we were walking to cat birthday. As I was walking with one of my friend, naturally talking about various topics until the topic of school came up. My friend started saying I wasn’t smart, and I was being a moron. That sentence stung, because I didn’t expect that from a friend. I didn’t know how to react to that comment I stayed silent but I was deeply hurt by that comment.
I’ve never exceeded academically, but hearing those words from people I care about felt like a punch in the gut. It made me question intelligence. I felt helplessness in that moment, unsure of how to defend myself.
I went home, I couldn’t hold back my tears. I confided the only person who’d understand me, I talked to her, she patiently listened to me as I talked about my cries. She said I don’t have to prove myself and I could prove them wrong but she reminded me that my value isn’t determined by others opnion.
Looking back at it, does words don’t define who I am. She made me understand my intelligence isnt measured by academic success of all. This experience taught me that people can misunderstand you but that doesn’t mean their perceptions is the truth.
