Owing to today’s rapidly evolving technology, online communication services like emails, electronic chats and social media applications have become mainstream and have enabled human beings across the globe to be more connected than ever before. In my view, although these novel platforms have dramatically improved communication between people, its effect on maintaining connections between people is not as rosy as it looks.
If we look into the past, the exchange of information over longer distances was a tedious and cumbersome task, like, for example, communicating via letters often took days if not months. Secondly, the expenses involved were often very high. On the other hand, emails and other online messages, barring the cost of the device and internet connection, are totally free of cost. What’s more, the instantaneousness of these chats, especially video chats, can simulate a real time conversation, even between people at two ends of the globe.
Having said that, the rapid advancement of digital communication services brings with it the danger of people being left out. Those who are not tech-savvy may find it difficult to adapt to the ever-changing digital landscape. Additionally, although digital media facilitates better communication, ultimately human beings are social animals and require physical presence of others from time to time. However, these days many people find it to be a burden to actually go out and meet others since it is easier to sit at home and have a video chat. I am of the opinion that this can affect the connection between individuals in the long run.
To conclude, although the positive effects of digital media like emails and chats on communication are undeniable, we must strive to ensure that everyone gets a slice of the pie, and should actively foster bonds between people via the occasional gatherings.
