The trend of people working until later stages of the life is becoming commonplace in many parts of the world nowadays. This could be attributed to different factors or career choices that people make in their lives and such a lifestyle could have an impact on one’s health. But, in my opinion, there are still more benefits in adopting it rather than in abandoning it.
Owing to the complete dominance of capitalism in the global market in the present era, it has been observed that by the time young people reach the end of their teen years, the only social identity that begins to matter is their occupation or their work domain and this lasts till very end of the life, at least for a healthy person. Consequently, people who retire at the typical retirement age seem to struggle with finding a new identity whereas those who somehow keep themselves involved with their trade get rewarded with more acceptance in social circles. Furthermore, the later group of people exercise a greater advantage of leveraging their lifetime experience and are placed well to add more value to their domain.
However, it cannot be denied that working hard after a certain period of life could have health implications. For example, people working in fast paced environments, such as administrative jobs in airline, undergo a lot of stress in holiday season due to the nature of the job. Such an area of work is not suitable for elderly people as it could pose a health risk. However, with careful and timely decisions in the career, people can avoid such situations and position themselves in more suitable areas of work for post retirement period.
Hence, continuing and extending work life as far as possible in one’s lifetime results in greater rewards but one has to be considerate of the choices to be made in order avoid its dangers.
