Many believe that providing patients with some basic knowledge about how to enhance their well-being is the responsibility of doctors. Although doctors have more important priorities, I firmly agree with this statement as doctors are more educated and can give valuable guidance to live a healthy lifestyle.
Admittedly, giving advice to patients is not a core job of doctors, because they first need to diagnose their patients accurately, which involves asking questions and performing tests. Since the results of diagnosis are crucial in a patient’s life, doctors should be careful and avoid misdiagnosis. After the diagnosis process, they then focus on finding the correct treatment for the ailment. If the hypothetical doctor described were also distracted by the mandate to give health advice, there is a small chance that this could hamper their primary duties.
Doctors indeed have academic and more in-depth knowledge about their field- the medical field, meaning that they know about illnesses and their cures more than us. Owing to this, they can give reliable and curable instructions about their patient’s health problems. By educating patients and making them informed decisions about their health, leading to better outcomes and a higher quality of life. Relatedly, this also can lead to better adherence to treatment plans as well as reduced risks of complications, when doctors aid patients take an active role managing their health.
In conclusion, despite having other important duties, I believe that doctors should prioritize educating patients about living a healthy lifestyle. This is because doctors possess extensive education and can offer valuable advice on maintaining health and well-being.
