Social media has a complex impact on people’s outlook on life, and whether it has a more optimistic or pessimistic effect is not yet determined. Therefore, in my opinion, social media often fosters negativity, especially on an individual’s mental health.
Social media can make people feel worse about themselves by encouraging constant comparisons. Every day, we see pictures of perfect vacations, flawless selfies, and big accomplishments that make us question our self-worth. What we usually forget is those contents are often well-edited and intended to be over-glamorized for people’s benefit.
Additionally, people nowadays are likely to be addicted to social media. They crave “perfection” and adore what they could not achieve in real life, making person-to-person interaction seem overwhelming for some people. Over time, this cycle takes a toll on mental health, leading to anxiety, low self-worth, and a negative outlook. Instead of appreciating their own lives, people caught in it feel stuck and unhappy, believing they will never measure up to the perfection they see online.
In conclusion, while social media has its benefits, it often creates unrealistic standards and fosters negative feelings. Life is not meant to be a Facebook wall, and people should appreciate their unique journey.
