Band 7+: Doing an enjoyable activity with a child can be better for their overall skills development and creativity than reading. To what extent do you agree?

Undoubtedly, with the emphasis on students’ comprehensive development, students are often participating in diverse activities as a new teaching method for studying. Whereas a plethora of proponents contend that children will achieve more positive development rather than reading static articles, I am in favor of this statement and the reasons will be thoroughly elaborated on as follows.

With the advancement of technology, retrieving information will not be a difficult task for most students, which may lead to lack of communication with others due to frequently tapping messages on electronic devices. That is to say, if schools provide students with some interactive events, it can absolutely enhance their interpersonal skills to fill up the gap from long-term use of the internet. Take my school curriculum as an example. In the past, we could only concentrate on the passages that printed on text books; however, most of my classmates forgot the context we had learned rapidly, so my teacher transferred her teaching method, using a presentation to promote students express their personal perspective of history issues, which not only impressed the knowledge on solid historical passages but also upgraded the organization of our communication capability.

Another point worth noting is that active activities allow students to learn how to collaborate and navigate challenges with partners. To put it another way, enjoyable exercises guide participants to solve situations including divergence of group members’ opinions, which cannot be experienced by reading. For instance, the Ministry of Education in Taiwan has shifted the high school’s education syllabus in 2018, which aims for students to learn how to work with others and tackle problems as well as enhance some abilities that are useful in future. Consequently, according to National Taiwan University, more than 80% of students reviewed that the changing systems can challenge and gain more skills from interesting experiments rather than absorb knowledge from teachers.

In conclusion, based on the aforementioned, engaging in motive activities benefits students’ all-round development and creative thoughts due to the enhancement of communication and collaborative abilities.
