With the continued rise of infrastructure and expanding supermarkets in some countries, the local businesses are hit with a major rising market competition. As far as I am concerned, local shops struggle to stand against the big business holders.
To begin with, rising market policies have made the survival of local shop owners quite into vain. Supermarkets offer a wide variety of items and luxury that a local owner cannot provide. Thus, there has been a rush towards the supermarkets more in the recent years. To deal with such large competitors, local businesses are working extensively, however these efforts are proving as in contrast to the large businesses. People from the weaker section tend to run these small businesses for their survival but worsening customer situation have made it even harder to earn a dole of bread.
Moreover, if this situation remains the same the small shop owners would eventually stop earning and lead to starvation and other financial traps. For instance, there are certain communities in India which earn their livelihood by making traditional garlands or other decorative items but with the arrival of supermarkets their work is uncategorized. Hence, the identity of the whole community dies if they stopped crafting it. So, they face a swift competition from the ready-made synthetic industry leading to hardships finding a market.
In conclusion, with the advent of the large businesses local goods are suppressed while the large one dominates creating a large gap. It is certain that these cottage industries dies with time, so does the local communities offering them.
