Many countries have undergone profound changes over the past few decades, driven by economic growth, globalization, and technological advancements. While these changes have brought numerous benefits, they have also led to the erosion of many traditional values and practices, which is often seen as a pity. This essay aims to delve into both sides extensively before saying that change is inevitable and that not all aspects of tradition need to stay the same in a rapidly modernizing society.

On the one hand, there are some rationales that explain why people view globalization as positive change. They point to the outdated values that are no longer necessary in today’s fast-paced world. In the past, for example, the belief system was pervasive in Vietnamese society, where boys were valued more highly than girls, particularly in rural and traditional families. Women were often relegated to subordinate roles, expected to prioritize domestic duties and child-rearing over personal ambitions or career aspirations. This societal emphasis on male superiority not only limited women’s opportunities but also reinforced a rigid social hierarchy that stifled progress. Fortunately, as Vietnam has modernized, there has been a significant shift away from these gender-biased values. Today, there is a growing recognition of gender equality and the importance of empowering women to participate fully in all aspects of society. This shift is evident in the increasing number of women pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, and holding leadership positions in various sectors. This progress reflects a broader commitment to human rights and social justice, aligning Vietnam with global standards and promoting a culture of innovation and diversity. On the other hands, others regard globalization as a negative development as it causes threats to cultural identity. They argue that the erosion of traditional values represents a loss of cultural identity and community cohesion. Many people nowadays, especially the young generation, do not appreciate their lives that their ancestors fought for many years. This has raised concerns about patriotism within the community, weakening the cultural bonds. Also, people now tend to wear Western clothes on a daily basis, regardless of any events of their nations, which can be seen as homogenization. Taking all these pertinent reasons into account, this tendency can result in a scenario where a nation cannot voice its unique culture to the world. This is particularly dangerous for poor countries as it can impede further innovations. In my opinion, I would contend that not all traditions are inherently valuable, some may reinforce outdated social norms or inhibit progress. For instance, certain superstitions and outdated rituals, such as child marriage in remote areas or excessive spending on lavish funeral ceremonies, have been increasingly criticized as the country evolves. These practices often impose financial and social burdens on families, and in some cases, violate human rights. Therefore, the abandonment of these harmful traditions is not a loss but rather a necessary step toward a more progressive and inclusive society.

In conclusion, the significant changes in society should not be viewed as a loss but as a positive and necessary evolution.
